When downloading a torrent, The Internet is Turned Off. Utorrent and Wi-Fi Router

It is not uncommon to experience a situation when downloading files through torrent clients (uTorrent and others), the Internet is lost. Most often this happens when the computer from which torrents are downloaded is connected to the Internet through a router. The connection can be either through a wireless Wi-Fi network, or through a network cable. And as practice shows, most often the Internet is simply disconnected. More precisely, access to the Internet disappears, but the connection to the router remains. And saves the situation only by rebooting the router, after which the Internet works again up to a certain point. If you do not disable torrent downloading, and close the uTorrent program.

True, there are individual cases when the Internet disappears, which is connected directly to the computer. And the computer itself can hang, or even reboot. But this is a topic for another article. In this case, it does not matter what operating system is installed on your computer. I have seen comments when launching a torrent client caused the Internet to shut down both in Windows 10 and Windows 7. It is clear that Windows 8 and even XP can be affected as well.

In this article we will try to find out what can be the cause of such connection failures, why it happens exactly when downloading files, and what can be done. I will show you how to configure uTorrent to try to get rid of this problem.

Weak Wi-Fi router – the cause of unstable torrent-client work

In almost all cases, the router is the culprit. More precisely, a weak router. If you have a connection through a budget router for 15-20 dollars, it is very likely that this router simply can not cope with the load that creates a torrent client, and hangs. The only way to bring it to its senses is to reboot it. Then, it keeps downloading files again for a while and “crashes” again.

I’ve seen cases when even without active downloads in uTorrent, the internet was constantly lost. There were several files on the giveaway. After uTorrent was closed completely, the internet started working more or less stable. It should be understood that the router hangs in extreme cases. If it even keeps the torrent client running, the connection speed is likely to be very slow. The ping will drop a lot. And if at this time other devices begin to use the connection at the same time, then this only exacerbates the situation, and the iron of the router simply can not withstand.

Low speed and interruptions when downloading torrents through the router

The whole problem is that the router can not cope with such a flow of requests. It simply does not have enough power. A weak processor, little RAM, and as it usually happens – raw software (firmware). Many people facing this problem often re-flash their routers with alternative firmware like OpenWRT, DD-WRT. But it rarely helps. On the native firmware the router can work even more stable.

Also the reason of such unstable work of the router at times of high load can be a problem on the board itself, or in the power supply. If the power supply is already a bit “worn out”, then it does not give out the necessary voltage, and the router itself suffers from this. I wrote about this in the article router constantly reboots, or you have to reboot.

If you have a tariff plan 100 Mbps, and you want to pump torrents at a good speed without problems, it is better to buy a normal router. At least for 50 dollars. You can see the article with tips on choosing a router. Otherwise, these 100 Mbit/s for which you pay the provider, you will not see. Over cable, maybe, but over wifi, no. An expensive router on wi-fi is also unlikely to squeeze out 100 Mbps, especially in the range of 2.4GHz, but the speed will definitely be higher.

Setting up uTorrent for stable work via wi-fi router

Start uTorrent and go to the program settings.

Configuring uTorrent to work over a Wi-Fi router

Go to the “BitTorrent” tab and make these settings:

  • Enable DHT network – uncheck the box.
  • Enable DHT for new torrents – uncheck this box.
  • Control [uTP] speed – also uncheck this option.

Click “Apply” and “Ok”.

BitTorrent settings when the internet is disconnected during downloading

After this setting try to put some file to download, and see if the Internet disappears. If the problem is not solved, you can still try to experiment with the speed settings and the maximum number of connections.

In the settings, on the “Speed” tab, try to limit the maximum speed of receiving and giving. You can set the same values as mine on the screenshot below.

You can also change the number of simultaneous connections. Set, for example, 100 and reduce the maximum number of peers per torrent.

Setting torrent client speed for stable operation over wi-fi

You should experiment with these values. Reduce them and see the result.

If the problem remains

In this case, if possible, connect your computer to the router not by wi-fi, but by network cable. If this doesn’t help either, then try connecting the internet directly to the computer, without the router. This should definitely solve the problem. But the Internet on other devices of course will not work.

If the direct download is stable, nothing breaks, then you need to think about buying a new and more powerful router. This option is likely to definitely solve the problem with unstable connection at the time of downloading torrents. And besides, the speed of the connection itself will be higher, if your tariff plan allows.

You can also update the firmware of your router. If there is a new version for your model on the manufacturer’s website.
