TP-Link TL-WR840N: Review, Characteristics

I got a chance to review the TP-LINK TL-WR840N router, which I’m going to tell you about now. If you are choosing a new router for yourself, this information should come in handy. I have already prepared instructions on how to set up the TP-LINK TL-WR840N. So, if you buy this router, you will be able to configure it.

To begin with, TP-LINK TL-WR840N is exclusively a router for a small home or office. If you need to organize the distribution of Internet over Wi-Fi and cable to more than 10 devices, and constantly download something, play online games, and perform other complex tasks, you need a more powerful router. For example, as an option you can look at TP-LINK Archer C20i, which also supports wi-fi 5 GHz.

This router will easily distribute the Internet to several devices via wi-fi and network cable. Judging by the information on the box, it can withstand online games, downloading files, etc. But you should realize that everything in moderation. If you run some heavy games on several computers at the same time, then most likely it will not withstand this load. If such budget models could cope with all the tasks, then who would buy a router that cost ten or more times more expensive.

TP-LINK TL-WR840N is an interesting model. Why? Look, it is practically no different from TP-LINK TL-WR841ND. And judging by its characteristics it is better than the popular TP-Link TL-WR740N. But for the price, it’s cheaper than the TL-WR740N. So there you go. For some reason it hasn’t become as popular as TL-WR841ND and TL-WR740N. Frankly speaking, I don’t even know why.

It’s a good router, which exactly corresponds to its price, and will cope with the tasks for which it was created.

A small review of TP-LINK TL-WR840N

Interesting design, white glossy plastic from which almost the whole router is made looks good. Only the panel for the indicators and the TP-LINK inscription are gray.

As for the controls, I was very pleased to see a separate button for turning on/off the power and a button for turning on/off the Wi-Fi network. This is what is missing in TP-LINK TL-WR740N. Also on the back side of the router you’ll find a WPS/RESET button, 4 LAN sockets and 1 WAN socket. And of course there is a power adapter socket.

TP-LINK TL-WR840N has built-in antennas, so nothing sticks out. Those who do not like protruding antennas, this model should like it. It should also be noted that there is an option to hang the router on the wall. For many people this is important. Specifically, I did not like only that the router’s feet are not rubberized, and it slides on the table.

Features

  • Wi-Fi network speed up to 300 Mbps
  • LAN ports with a maximum speed of 100 Mbps
  • The router uses 1 WAN port with a maximum speed of 100 Mbps to connect to the Internet.
  • Two built-in antennas
  • There is support for WDS bridging
  • WAN connection type. Everything is standard here: Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP, L2TP, BigPond.

More detailed specifications and other information on this router you can see on the official website. Here is its page: https://www.tp-link.com/en/home-networking/wi-fi-router/tl-wr840n/#overview.

TP-LINK TL-WR840N: reviews

I read reviews about TP-LINK TL-WR840N on the internet, looked at what people write, and I didn’t see anything bad.

I know what you are most interested in: how much it cuts speed, and what is the radius of coverage of the Wi-Fi network. I have already written somewhere about it. Everything is individual. A lot depends on the conditions where you will use the router and the devices you will connect to it. If you look at the reviews, you can see information that some people get 80 Mbps or even more on Wi-Fi. And there are reviews where you can’t even squeeze out 10 Mbps. I would advise you not to even pay attention to this information.

It’s the same with wireless coverage radius. Everyone has different houses, different walls, and different sources of interference. How far the router will be able to pierce the signal depends a lot on that.

This router is definitely no worse than other models you can buy for this price. I liked the router. And then it’s a matter of taste, it seems to me that the majority of people when buying a router in general are guided by the appearance of the device. So you can see the photo at the top of this page.
