ASUS RT-N12+-reViews, Review and Characteristics

This page will be fully dedicated to the excellent Asus RT-N12+ router, and probably to all Asus RT-N12 models with different letters at the end of the name (if possible, I will do it for other models). Here I’ll make a small review of this router, tell you about its main features, write a review, and you can leave your own review of Asus RT-N12 router.
If you chose a router of this company, you probably noticed that there are a lot of similar models. Both in name and in appearance. These are: the usual Asus RT-N12, Asus RT-N12+ (the hero of this page has a slightly smaller case), Asus RT-N12 VP (which has a slightly larger wireless coverage area), Asus RT-N12 LX, Asus RT-N12 D1, Asus RT-N12E, and even RT-N11P. All of these devices are pretty much the same. They have the same functionality and practically the same features. And the price doesn’t differ much. What is the difference then? The difference is usually in the case, they look a little different, and in the stuffing (different chipset, and possibly other components).
What kind of router is it, and what functions is it suitable for? It’s a mid-range router, it’s not as budget (and cheap) as for example Tenda N3, and not as powerful (and expensive) as the same Asus RT-N65U. It’s just perfect for an average-sized apartment, a private house and a small office (although for an office I would buy a more expensive model).
A small review of Asus RT-N12+
I’ve always liked networking devices from Asus. For their design, stability of work and good control panel. Maybe the appearance of the router doesn’t matter for someone, but you want the purchased device to look good and fit into the design of your house. Asus RT-N12+ looks very stylish. It (and almost all Asus routers) looks like a sports car (this is purely my opinion:)). The device is made of high-quality plastic, which is faceted on the front panel, and on the top is made under the polished metal. Everything is assembled very kindly. The router looks very interesting because of the sharp lines and even the antennas are made unusually.
There are 4 indicators on the top panel: device power, Wi-Fi network activity, Internet connection activity, and LAN connection activity. The indicators shine with a pleasant green color. There is nothing on the side panels, all the connectors and buttons are located on the back side. There are 4 LAN sockets, 1 WAN socket, and a power socket. From the buttons: the power button and the WPS activation button, which is also responsible for resetting the router. I think it’s not quite right to place WPS and reset on the same button (when pressing and holding it for more than 10 seconds).
The antennas are not removable, so you can’t connect your own, more powerful ones. It’s possible to hang Asus RT-N12+ on the wall, and the device has rubberized feet at the bottom, so it doesn’t slip on the table.
Everything is assembled qualitatively, but I found two minuses in the case: if you shake the router, something zelenchits in the antennas, and for some reason all LAN and WAN connectors are painted in one color. Yes, they are signed at the bottom, but I think they should be different in color. Ideally: LAN – yellow, WAN – blue.
The main features of Asus RT-N12+:
- 1 WAN port – Ethernet with support for PPPoE, IPsec, L2TP, PPTP protocols
- 4 LAN ports (for connecting computers, TVs, game consoles, etc. via cable) with the maximum speed up to 100 Mb/s.
- Maximum speed of connection via wi-fi – 300 Mb/s. The network operates at a frequency of 2.4 GHz.
- Can operate in the modes: router, repeater and access point
- 2 fixed antennas with a capacity of 5 dBi each. This is enough for a small house. The signal range depends a lot on the walls and the correct location of Asus RT-N12+
- There is support for IPTV, and such functions as Virtual Server, DMZ, NTP Client, UPnP, etc.
- Package: router, network cable, power adapter, instructions, warranty (the warranty is 36 months by the way).
Reviews of Asus RT-N12+
As usual, I read a lot of reviews, and I couldn’t find anything bad about this router. You know how it happens, if a certain model has some problem, then everyone writes about it en masse. Well, there Wi-Fi often breaks, freezes, etc. Except that a little bit of speed cuts, people put there some left firmware, but this is already a loss of warranty. Well, and it seemed to me that the coverage radius is not large. You can count on 1-2 rooms.
And so, a normal router, which will be enough for your computers, phones, tablets, TVs and other devices. You will be able to play online games, watch online videos and surf the Internet without any problems. You will be able to set up IPTV, watch movies via DLNA, and use other interesting features.
If you have a big house and you plan to connect many devices to Asus RT-N12+, watch online videos in high quality and on several devices simultaneously, while playing online games and downloading torrents, RT-N12+ will hardly cope with it. Look for a device more powerful and several times more expensive.
Among the competitors of this router I would single out TP-LINK TL-WR841ND and Linksys E1200.
Leave your reviews about Asus RT-N12+ in the comments below, it will be very interesting to read reviews from users who have had this router for some time. Thank you!
