Internet via 3G modem and local network together in Windows 10

Here’s the deal. I have Win10x64 on my computer. I use the Internet with the help of 3G modem Vodafone. When I connect my computer with my laptop via local network, the Internet in the computer immediately stops working. If I disconnect the devices, then the Internet appears on the computer.

It seems that when I connect the cable there is some reconfiguration and the Internet starts to be accessed only through the local network.

Such problems were not observed with Win7 and Win8.1. And the shared folder worked, and the laptop was connected to the Internet and on the computer itself was access to the Internet. The laptop is the same, with Win7. Please help.

Answer

I understand your question. I don’t know any simple solution. Moreover, I don’t have a personally tested solution to this problem. But there is one way you can try.

The thing is that the connection speed on the local network is 100 Mbps. And the speed via 3G modem is correspondingly lower. In Windows by default the function “Automatic metric assignment” is enabled. As far as I understand, all priority is given to the LAN connection. And Windows 10 tries to use the local network to access the Internet. And there is no internet on it.

To make the 3G USB modem connection work together with the LAN connection, you can try manually assigning an interface metric for each adapter.

I’ll show you on the example of Ethernet adapter (LAN). But you need to do this procedure for both connections. Only for Ethernet we set the value to 10, and for the modem connection we set the value to 1.

Changing the network adapter interface metric in Windows 10

What we do is this:

  • Go to Network Connections. Right-click on the Ethernet adapter and select “Properties”.
  • Highlight “IP version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” and click on “Properties.”
  • Click on the “Advanced” button.
  • Uncheck the box next to “Automatically assign metric”.
  • In the field specify the value. For Ethernet – 10. For 3G connection – 1.
  • Click Ok.

I have shown everything in detail on the screenshot (click to enlarge).

Let me remind you that we do exactly the same for 3G modem connection. Only there is a different metric value.

Update: disabling the “Windows Connection Manager” service

There are already several reports in the comments that this problem can be solved by disabling the “Windows Connection Manager” service.

Important! After disabling the “Windows Connection Manager” service, the WLAN autotuning service will stop working. The computer will not see Wi-Fi networks. Even if you don’t need Wi-Fi right now, don’t forget about it.

Do it this way:

  • Press the Win+R keyboard shortcut and type the services.msc command. Click Ok.
  • In the “Services” window, look for “Windows Connection Manager.”
  • Right-click on it and select “Properties”.
  • Set the startup type to “Disabled”, click on “Stop”, then “Apply” and “Ok”.
    Disable Windows Connection Manager.
  • The “Services” window can be closed.

If after this there are any problems with the Internet connection, turn this service back on.

After these actions, both local network and Internet connection via modem should work.
