ASUS RT-N18U-CHARACTERISTICS, Review, and Photos of the Router

Asus RT-N18U is an interesting model of Wi-Fi router in a beautiful case, and with support for 3G/4G USB modems, printers, USB drives, etc. Also, the router attracts with its functionality, and the presence of two USB connectors, one of which is version 3.0. I bought Asus RT-N18U exclusively for working with 3G USB-modem. Now we’ll take a closer look at this model, and I’ll share my impressions of this router.

This router is perfect for home use. For demanding, advanced users. It has several interesting features, such as ASUS AiCloud, Media Server (shared access to files on the drive), AiDisk, Download Master and so on. Asus RT-N18U will easily provide Internet connection for a large number of devices. If you like to play online games, watch online videos, download torrents, etc., this router will suit you. I have no problems with it in this regard, it works stably. The load holds well.

As for Wi-Fi coverage, despite the use of ASUS AiRadar and 3 antennas, the signal is not much stronger than in cheaper routers. I honestly expected more. But, for home, this router is quite enough. And we should not forget that the radius of Wi-Fi network depends not only on the router, but also on its location, channel load, thickness of walls in the house and other interferences.

A small review of Asus RT-N18U

Very good impressions are left just from the router itself, its case, materials and build quality. When you take RT-N18U in your hands, you can immediately feel the quality. It is bigger and heavier than cheaper models, for example, Asus RT-N12. The materials and the build quality are top-notch.

It looks very cool and stylish. Like most Asus routers, this model looks like a sports car body.

On the back panel of the router you’ll find 4 LAN sockets, 1 WAN socket, 1 USB version 2.0, WPS activation button, reset button (by the way, it’s not signed as RESSET), power socket, power off/on button, and mounts for three antennas. There is nothing on the side panels, and in the front there is another USB, but already version 3.0.

The indicators on the top of the router are highlighted in blue color and they are not bright at all. If Asus RT-N18U is installed in the bedroom, they won’t interfere with it.

Features and main characteristics

Let’s take a look at what makes the Asus RT-N18U attractive.

Features:

  • Very easy to set up. Especially through the quick setup wizard. The router control panel itself is simple and clear. True, the translation of the menu items is a bit interesting.
  • USB 3G modem support. If you have access to the Internet via 3G modem and you need a powerful, functional router that will distribute the Internet to other devices, then Asus RT-N18U will definitely suit you.
  • Two USB slots, in which you can connect the same USB modems and distribute the Internet, you can connect a USB-drive or hard disk, and organize a common access to files for all devices. Computers, phones, TVs that will be connected to RT-N18U will have access to the files that are on the connected drive. There is a function ASUS AiCloud with which you can organize access to files from the Internet.
  • By connecting a printer to Asus RT-N18U, it will be possible to send documents or photos for printing from any device on the network.
  • Download Master – perhaps for many people this is not a very useful feature. But if you don’t have a very high-speed Internet (for example, 3G), this function will come in handy. The router can download torrents or ordinary files to a USB-drive connected to it. And the most interesting thing is that it can do it at a set time. For example, you can schedule the download of several movies for the night, and in the morning everything will be ready. The download wizard really works, I use it myself.
  • If you have a fast Internet, then definitely, the presence of TurboQAM function will be a plus. Data transfer speeds over Wi-Fi grow up to 600 Mbps.
Main features

All the specifications can be seen on the official website.

  • WAN ports: the usual Ethernet, and support for USB modems. By the way, instead of a modem can be a phone that runs on Android.
  • 4 LAN (RJ45) connectors with a maximum speed of 1 Gbps.
  • 1 USB 2.0, and 1 USB 3.0.
  • The wi-fi network operates at 2.4 GHz.
  • Wi-Fi network speed, more than 300 Mbps.
  • Three antennas. Information on power unfortunately nowhere found. The antennas are removable, so you can connect other antennas if necessary.

Reviews of Asus RT-N18U

Mostly people in the comments complain about the not very large radius of the Wi-Fi network. I didn’t notice any other serious problems. All these comments don’t tell us anything. Many, for example, write that very low speed on wi-fi. This means that the router cuts the speed. And they connect and check the speed through an old adapter, which slows everything down. Everyone has their own devices, conditions and views on technology.

As for my opinion about Asus RT-N18U, I am completely satisfied with this device. It’s beautiful, it’s easy to set up, there are a lot of different functions, it works stably. What else do you need from a Wi-Fi router. If you like this model, it suits you in terms of features and price – buy it. And if you don’t like it, you will return it back. Are you afraid that it is unreliable and will break? So there is a warranty of 3 years, you will sooner get tired of it, or outdated. I did not find any significant disadvantages in this router. Only that the USB connector on the back panel could be placed a little farther from the power connector. Modem with antenna does not fit.
