Wi-Fi Internet in a private house. Selection of a Router, and Which Internet to Connect

In order to organize a Wi-Fi network in a private home, you will need, of course, a connection to the Internet, well, and the Wi-Fi router itself, which will already distribute the Internet to all your devices. If, for example, compare a private home with an apartment, or some office, then the house does not need a special router, or any other special equipment. All the difference is that compared to an apartment, a private house is usually located outside the city, where it is not always possible to connect the usual, cable Internet.
Therefore, if you decide to make in your private home connection to the Internet on wi-fi, well, and network cable, you first need to choose a way to connect to the Internet, the operator (Internet service provider), and then, already under a certain connection you need to choose a Wi-Fi router. Well, private houses, as a rule, are much larger than ordinary apartments, and several floors. Therefore, most likely need to install not only one wi-fi router, but also a repeater Wi-Fi network, or several routers. In order that the Wi-Fi network would cover the entire house, and all floors. Near a private house, there is usually a yard, where you can bask in the sun. Therefore, for many it is important that the Internet on Wi-Fi would also work in the yard near the house.
It is in these moments we will try to understand in the article. We will find out what Internet is better to connect to a private home, what router to choose, how to install it and make it so that the Wi-Fi network would work throughout the house. I think this is exactly what you need.
Let’s divide the article into several sections:
- Connecting to the Internet in a private house: in the city, outside the city, or in the village. Choosing the method of connection, and the Internet provider.
- Choosing a Wi-Fi router to distribute the Internet wirelessly in a private home.
- Strengthening the Wi-Fi network in the house. What to do if Wi-Fi does not catch on all floors, and in the yard.
You can go straight to the section you need. For example, if you already have the Internet connected, or you know which one to connect, you can go straight to the choice of router.
What kind of internet to connect to a private house?
To connect your smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other devices to the Internet via wi-fi, you need to connect the Internet to the router that will distribute the wireless network. Therefore, the first thing you need to do is to run the internet into the house. The most optimal internet in terms of price/quality/speed is a regular Ethernet cable. Or, what else is there now, it seems that fiber optics is becoming a popular way to connect to the Internet. In the city, in the apartment can easily connect such an Internet. It does not cost much, and the speed there is good.
If your house is located in the city, or even outside the city, you should definitely find out if there is an opportunity to connect the cable Internet. You can ask your neighbors, perhaps they have already connected the Internet, and you can do the same in your house. First of all, you need to find out what kind of connection is possible in your area.
Let’s look at different connection technologies, let’s start with the most optimal ones:
- Regular cable internet (Ethernet), or fiber optic. Be sure to find out if it is possible to pull such a cable into your home.
- ADSL Internet. Connection via telephone line. If you have a landline phone, you can find out from your operator whether he provides Internet connection in your locality.
- Wireless 3G, 4G LTE internet via USB modem. In most cases, this is the only way to connect internet in a private home. Especially if your house is located in the village, where it is not possible to cable internet. Internet from USB modem can also be distributed via wi-fi, everything works perfectly. You only need a special router. Let’s consider this issue below in the article.
It seems to me that 4G Internet now works better than for example ADSL. Here you have to choose. Look at the tariffs, the speed of connection.
Most likely, you will connect 3G, 4G LTE Internet. Look at what there are offers from operators, what there are tariffs and coverage. It is desirable to choose the operator that has the best coverage in your area. If your area has a very poor 4G signal, or even 3G, you will need to install a special antenna. But, this will tell you the operator whose services you want to use.
I think we have sorted out the connection to the Internet in a private house. Internet provider can offer you a modem, or Wi-Fi router, which will distribute wireless network. If they do not have such a service, or the proposed equipment does not suit you, then you will need to choose, buy and install a router. The router is chosen depending on the Internet, which you spent in your home. Well, and do not forget about the plosha, to which you need to distribute Wi-Fi network, and the load that the router must withstand.
Choosing a Wi-Fi router for a private home
Recently, I published an actual article with tips on choosing a router for an apartment or house. The article is large, detailed, you can read it.
Routers are not divided into those for apartments, houses, offices, etc. The main thing is that the router would support connection to the Internet, which is carried out in your home.
If you have internet via USB modem
If you have internet via 3G/4G modem, you need a router that supports USB modems. If there is a USB port on the router, it does not mean that it knows how to connect to the Internet via modem and distribute it via wi-fi. On choosing a router that supports USB modems, I wrote in the article: How to give out Internet over Wi-Fi with 3G USB modem? Routers with support for USB modems.
Everything is very simple: connect the modem to the router, set the necessary parameters, and everything is ready. The router receives internet from the modem, and distributes it via Wi-Fi and cable. It looks like this:
If you have poor reception, your internet speed may be very slow. In this case, installing a special antenna can help. And be sure to configure the modem (antenna) for maximum reception through the program AxesstelPst EvDO BSN, and only after the configuration, connect it to the router.
If the Internet is via regular cable (Ethernet), or ADSL
If you already have an ADSL modem, you can buy the most common router with a WAN connector RJ-45, connect it to the modem, and it will distribute the Internet throughout the house. There are many routers that support the connection of a telephone cable (WAN connector RJ-11). Or, it would be more correct to say ADSL modems, which are able to distribute wi-fi.
Well, if the house, from the provider laid the most common network cable (RJ-45), you need a conventional router. There are a lot of them on the market now. You can see reviews of some models in the category /reviews-and-information-about-routers/. Also, we have instructions on how to set up many routers, from different manufacturers.
If you have a large house and you will be connecting many devices, I advise you not to save money on a router. Especially if you plan to watch online videos, play online games, etc. Well, the radius of coverage of Wi-Fi network, to some extent also depends on the power, and accordingly the price of the router.
What to do if Wi-Fi does not catch all over the house and in the yard?
And so, you have connected the Internet, installed in your home Wi-Fi router, the Internet on the wireless network works, but as it often happens, the coverage is not in all rooms. And in the case of a private house, Wi-Fi may not catch on other floors, and in the yard near the house. Therefore, we need to somehow extend the range of the Wi-Fi network. This can be done in several ways:
- If the signal in the desired rooms is still there, but it is very weak, then you can try to strengthen it without buying any devices. For example, by setting up a router, and other ways, which I wrote about in this article. Or, by replacing the antennas on the router, on more powerful. On the purchase of antennas, already need to spend. Also, I advise you to choose the optimal location of the router.
- In my opinion, the best option is to buy and install a repeater. What is a repeater, you can read here. I recently wrote an instruction on how to install and configure a repeater from TP-LINK. The repeater will simply amplify your existing Wi-Fi network.
- You can install another router. For example, on the second floor. If possible, it is best to connect the routers via a network cable, and the second one can be configured in access point mode. Also, routers can be connected via wireless network, in repeater mode, or in WDS bridge mode. Here everything depends on the model and manufacturer of the router.
- Internet over the power grid in a private house. I’m not kidding 🙂 Thanks to HomePlug AV technology, and special adapters, you can run the Internet over the usual electrical wiring, and connect to it from any outlet throughout the house. For example, you have a router on the first floor. We plug a special PowerLine adapter into the outlet near it, to which we connect the Internet. And on the second and third floor, put one more PowerLine adapter, to which you can connect devices by cable, or even wi-fi. Or, install and connect to them one more router. There are a lot of options, and for a private home, this is a great solution. I have already written about setting up such a scheme on the example of TP-LINK TL-WPA4220KIT adapters.
- If you need good Wi-Fi coverage in your yard, the best option is to install an outdoor access point. Which is placed outside the house, connected to a router (modem), and gives excellent Wi-Fi coverage throughout the area near your house.
Let’s summarize
First find, and determine for yourself the best way to connect to the Internet, which is available in the place where your house is located. If it’s possible to run cable, great. If not, you will most likely have to connect 3G, 4G LTE internet.
As you decide on the method of connection, you need to choose a router. The main thing is that it would work with your Internet connection. Well and focus on the size of your house, the number of devices, and the load that should withstand the router. For a large, private home, it is better to buy not the cheapest model of router.
When everything is set up, check if the Wi-Fi network catches everywhere you need it. If there are problems with coverage, then read the tips above, choose the best option for you, and expand the radius of coverage of Wi-Fi network in your home and yard.
