ASUS Routers with USB 3G/4G Modem

In this article I want to tell you about router models from ASUS that support 3G and 4G modems. Recently, I have already published an article in which I wrote about routers that support USB modems. But, there I considered models from different manufacturers, and in this article we will talk only about ASUS routers, and in more detail.
In a nutshell, what does 3G/4G modem support mean in general. This is when we can connect a regular USB modem to the router, through which it will connect to the Internet, and distribute this Internet to our devices over Wi-Fi network. Such a router is suitable for those who connect to the internet via a 3G USB modem. If you have such Internet, you probably know that the modem itself we can connect only to one computer. And accordingly, access to the Internet will be from one device.
But what to do if we have several computers, and even phones with tablets. In this case, you can buy a special router that supports modems, connect the modem to the router, and configure the Internet. And all our devices (notebooks, PCs, smartphones, tablets) will already receive the Internet from the router via wi-fi, or network cable. I use this connection myself, and by the way, I also have an ASUS router. Model RT-N18U. Only the modem I have now is Huawei EC 306-2. I didn’t take a picture of it, I took another one, it’s all wrapped in duct tape 🙂 It looks like this:
And if for some reason you don’t want to buy a router, and you have a laptop, or a PC with a wifi module, you can try to give out internet from your computer.
Now we will understand what model of router ASUS can be bought to work in tandem with a USB modem. I will write how to determine whether the router will work with your modem (since you probably already have a modem), and how to set it all up.
Which ASUS router to choose to work with 3G modem
In this respect, I like ASUS company very much. They have almost all routers (and maybe all), which have USB ports, support 3G/4G modems. I think it’s very cool. After all, if there is a USB port, it’s probably just a matter of software. So why not make support for modems. Other companies have it exactly like this. They have USB connectors, but no support. Only on some models.
Once again, I would like to emphasize two important points I wrote about above. We will deal with them:
- Choosing a router model that support 3G modems.
- Checking the compatibility of ASUS router with the modem.
As for the support of USB modems, in the characteristics of routers, this point is usually indicated by the item “WAN: 3G/4G”. Along with this, routers support connection to the Internet via a regular network cable.
As you can see, the choice is very large. For any needs and for any purse. The only thing I would advise you to get a router with 5G Wi-Fi support. I bought my ASUS RT-N18U a bit too much. It doesn’t support the new standard. If you are interested, you can read a detailed article on choosing routers.
How to determine the compatibility of a router with a modem
This is a very important point. Otherwise, the router may simply not see your USB modem after connection. Or, not connect to the internet. So, before buying, make sure that the router supports your modem.
First of all, find out the model of your modem. The model is usually indicated on the body of the modem. On the official website there is a page with all the modems that ASUS routers are compatible with. Here is the link: https://www.asus.com/event/networks_3G4G_support/. Go there and look for your modem in the list. You can use Ctrl+F to search the page.
If you can’t find your model, you can google something like this “router model + modem model”. You may find something interesting and useful. Further, you can call ASUS support and check with them. And if there is no way, then look at routers from other manufacturers.
I can say for sure that the router will work with Huawei EC 306-2 modem and Novatel U720. It is tested. Everything works very stably. True, here everything depends on the modem and operator. Since wireless Internet itself is not very stable.
Setting up connection via 3G/4G modem on ASUS router.
Everything is very simple there. In addition, the control panel on all models is the same.
As far as I remember, the router started to distribute the Internet immediately after plugging the modem into the USB socket. The settings look like this:
Choose, buy, customize, you will succeed. Even if you live in a village, outside the city, and you have the opportunity to connect only wireless 3G/4G Internet, you can easily make a Wi-Fi network in your home, and connect all your devices. Especially since the internet is fast now, especially 4G. And 3G is enough even for Smart TV, if a good tariff, modem, signal and base station is not loaded. For more speed, you can install an antenna for the modem, or the modem itself can be configured for better reception through the program AxesstelPst EvDO BSNL.
Feel free to ask in comments. Always glad to help. And I will be very grateful if you and write about the compatibility of your router and modem. If you have already set up and everything works.
