It makes no difference what mode the router is in. Clients are devices that are connected to the router. All client information is displayed there as well.
Why you have more clients than connected devices: the information is displayed there with a delay, it is not always up to date. You need to see which devices are unnecessary. You can check all devices by MAC addresses.
Is the wi-fi network password-protected? Maybe your neighbors are connected too. You can try to change the password of the main router and reconfigure your Asus RT-N15U in the repeater mode.
The number of clients changes because some devices are simply disconnected. Even some mobile devices when not in use.
