Wi-Fi Router TP-Link TL-WR942N. Review and Reviews

There are a lot of routers on the market now. Not only each manufacturer has a lot of different models, but also the manufacturers themselves have become more numerous. Choosing a wi-fi router is a painful topic nowadays. And to help a little in this matter, I wrote a separate article with tips on choosing a Wi-Fi router for the home. I would divide all routers into those that support the new standard 802.11ac (wi-fi 5 GHz), and those that do not support wi-fi 5 GHz, and distribute the network at the usual frequency of 2.4 GHz. And if you do not need support for the new standard, you can save a little money when buying a router.
TP-Link TL-WR942N model lacks support for wi-fi 5 GHz, it is not a dual-band router. But it has a good effect on the price. And the model turned out to be well balanced. In the sense that it has everything you need to build a home Wi-Fi network, and for a good price. And if you need a dual-band router (with 5 GHz support), see the article with tips on choosing a router, the link to which I gave above.
I won’t describe TP-Link TL-WR942N specifications. You can see them on the official website or in any online store. I’ll only highlight the main features of the router.
- The maximum Wi-Fi speed is 450 Mbps.
- Two USB ports. For connecting USB drives and printers.
- There is support for USB 3G/4G modems. In the characteristics on the official site, and in the same online stores about it is written. But, for some reason I failed to make TL-WR942N friends with Huawei EC 306-2 modem. If you are planning to buy this model to work with 3G/4G modem, you should definitely check compatibility on the official site first. I think with the release of the next firmware everything will work.
- The new control panel has become more beautiful, modern and functional.
- Offline download. This is a function that allows you to put files to download in the router settings, and it will download them to a connected flash drive by itself. There is a scheduler, that is, you can set the time when the router will download files itself.
- Three 5 dBi antennas.
- Full support for IPTV.
- You can control the router from your mobile device, via the Tether app.
But the most important thing for us, is the stable operation of the router and the wireless Wi-Fi network. Right? To be honest, I didn’t load it, I didn’t check how many devices it can withstand and what kind of load. It’s not easy to do that.
I think there will be no problems with network stability. Online video, games, file transfer via DLNA, everything will work. The hardware, of course, is not top-of-the-line, but not the most budget. It’s a middle-of-the-road device. It’s just fine for home. Although, if you have a very limited budget, do not need USB ports, and you do not have a strong load on the router, you can find a cheaper model. The same TP-Link TL-WR841N, or even TP-Link TL-WR740N, if you look at models from this manufacturer.
TP-Link TL-WR942N review
It’s black and glossy. It’s even hard to take a picture of it, though it’s possible that I’m a bad photographer:)) And so, everything is in the TP-Link style – quality plastic and good assembly. They have no problems with it.
On the front panel we have indicators, which are lit in green color, and the inscription “N450”. On top is the TP-Link logo.
All the buttons and ports are on the back panel of the device as usual. There we have the traditional 4 LAN and 1 WAN port. Two USB (2.0), and a port for connecting the power adapter. An On/Off button, a button to disable wi-fi, and a WPS/Reset button.
The only thing is that the ports are not very well placed. A modem and a flash drive, for example, are unlikely to be connected at the same time. You’ll have to use an extension cord for the modem. Also, the On/Off button is likely to interfere with the modem. So buy an extension cord at once, but not a long one.
An important point: antennas are not removable. The router can be hung on the wall, there are special holes for this purpose. The package is standard: router, power adapter, network cable and documentation.
Reviews of TP-Link TL-WR942N
The model is new, so, there are few reviews so far. I don’t have a lot of experience with the TP-Link TL-WR942N, but I liked it. It’s functional, it works stably, and what else do I need from it. I didn’t notice any serious disadvantages. The fact that the glossy case leaves fingerprints, I think it’s nothing at all as for a router. Did not want to work with my 3G modem, but this is already a problem in the firmware. Well of the minuses still non-removable antennas and the lack of rubber feet.
If you already own this router, then be sure to leave your review of TP-Link TL-WR942N in the comments. I, and the visitors of wifiwiki.net will be grateful to you!
