Slow Internet on a weak computer C Windows XP via D-Link DWA-125
I built a computer from what I had: motherboard ASRock 775i65GV (BIOS P1.80), Intel Celeron CPU 2.66 GHz, Windows XP. Internet speed when the computer is connected by cable is about 38 Mbit/s, and when connected by Wi-Fi the speed drops to 16 Mbit/s.
It says that the signal strength is excellent. I am using a DWA-125.
At the same time, on my desktop computer, the Internet speed, both on cable and wi-fi
(with the same DWA-125) is about the same and is 45 Mbps.
On the “dacha” computer a huge number of components used by this connection have been installed:
- a client for Microsoft networks,
- Microsoft networks file and printer access service,
- QoS packet scheduler,
- Realtek EAPPkt Protocol,
- AEGIS Protocol (IEEE 802.1x) v3.7.5.0,
- Link Layer Topology Detection Responder,
- Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
Is there any way to increase the speed, or are all the problems related to the computer hardware?
Thank you for any help and hints.
Answer
Hello. I think it’s the old Windows XP that you installed on your “dacha” computer that’s to blame. Maybe even something with the driver for D-Link DWA-125, which is designed specifically for Windows XP. Or maybe it’s a feature of the system itself.
The system is reading, only installed. It is unlikely that the low speed on Wi-Fi because of some third-party programs or settings. Ideally, you can try to disable all components except “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)”. But this is unlikely to have any effect on the speed.
Install Windows 7 instead. You did not write how much RAM you have in your computer, but I am sure that Windows 7 will work as well as XP. You will have fewer problems. Not only with the speed of internet connection.
Or just get over it. The speed is not critically slow.
