Weak and unstable WiFi signal in another room (through one wall from the router)
The router Cisco-Linksys WRT54G2 is in the next room. A couple of days ago in my room became very weak and unstable wi-fi signal. For 7 years there were no problems with reception.
With the help of InSSID determined that channel 6 has a signal with Quality twice as high as mine. Changed the channel to a free channel, Quality became 70, but no improvement. In the room where the router is located Speedtest showed 14 Mbps, and in my room 0.01 Mbps.
Problems with the signal in the room with the router no what, but in the other room can not even go to http://192.168.1.1. Tried to change other settings, no result. Tell me what could happen and what else to do to improve the signal.
Answer
Good day. As in other similar situation, the problem could be anything. It’s a pity that you didn’t write (or maybe you didn’t check) if there is a problem with signal and connection speed in the neighboring room through other devices. It is possible that the problem is on the side of that particular device. Yes, most often the cause is the router, but it can happen.
Did you change anything before this problem occurred? Did you move the router or install any additional devices? It could be interference. And interference can be not only from neighboring Wi-Fi networks.
Do you have in the room where the router Cisco Linksys WRT54G2 is installed and in the neighboring room where there is a very bad signal of Wi-Fi network and Internet speed devices find a lot of Wi-Fi networks? Have you tried setting different wireless network channels on your router?
If experiments with the network channel and channel width (try separately 20 MHz and 4MHz) do not give any result, weak and unstable signal already in the neighboring room on the devices, then most likely it is some hardware problem in Cisco Linksys WRT54G2. Especially, as I realized, it has already been working for 7 years. And this is not a little for a router. Perhaps some condensates have blown up. Maybe the power supply is the reason (you can try to replace it with another one with the same characteristics). And it does not give out as much power as it used to. This happens not infrequently.
You can, of course, reset it, update the firmware, but I’m not sure it will help. Most likely, you will have to replace it. But you should realize that these are only my assumptions. I have not seen the router itself and can only understand the problem based on your description.
