Why does D-Link DIR-300 cut the speed and works unstable?

Hello. I have a router D-Link DIR-300 for a hundred years and I have been tormented with it more than once. Previously, I had to reinstall it through the operator (torment not understanding), then gave it to some masters, something that somehow re-flashed and more strong tears were not, but now a day a hundred times or a week not once have to pull it out of the socket, because the phone begins to write that the password is not correct…..

The question is this, I checked the speed on the phone via wi-fi: incoming connection 33.61 Mbit/s = 4.20 Mbyte/s, outgoing connection 51.02 Mbit/s = 6.38 Mbyte/s. The tariff with the name “internet 60” up to 58.59 Mbps . Is my old DIR-300 too bad? Does it cut the speed? Please do not ignore, better take with humor, because I do not understand at all …. thank you in advance.

Answer

Hello. There is no reason to ignore your question, you described everything more or less normally. Yes and there is no humor here. Really, I don’t really understand what answer you wanted to see. Since your question is more rhetorical, and it is impossible to give any specific answer to it. Come on, let’s try to deal with your D-Link DIR-300, which is already a hundred years old 🙂 .

I don’t know how many years your D-Link DIR-300 has been working for (I think it’s definitely not a hundred), but as a rule, over time the router hardware “wears out” and the router starts to work unstable. Constantly hangs, connection is lost, ping drops, etc. First of all suffer budget models, such as DIR-300. Since the hardware in them is cheaper and less qualitative. By the word hardware I mean the very board in the router and the power supply. Not infrequently problems are due to the power supply, which can not give the necessary voltage and from this router starts to get cranky. This is to the first part of your question, where you wrote that you often have to reboot D-Link DIR-300, because it hangs. The error “password is not correct” can also be due to problems with the router. And how do other devices work at this point?

Yes, your DIR-300 cuts the speed (as well as other routers). If not cut, it would give those 60 Mbit/s (for some reason you wrote 58.59 Mbit/s), which promises the provider. The first thing you need to do is to check if your ISP is delivering those 60 Mbps. You need to connect the Internet without a router, directly to your computer and check the speed. It may turn out that the router has nothing to do with it. I assume that you have already done this and you managed to squeeze out 58 Mbps.

But 33 Mbps over wi-fi for D-Link DIR-300, which is not new – this is not the worst result. Here it is important to remember that the speed over Wi-Fi network depends on various factors (interference, signal strength, type of connection to the provider, load on the router, etc.) and on the device on which you measure the speed of the Internet. In your case, it’s your phone. It is possible that on another device the speed will be higher, or vice versa – lower. It may be that this is the maximum speed you can get from these devices (router/smartphone) in the conditions they are in and with this internet connection.

It is not a fact that the speed will be higher after replacing the router. It could be even worse, or it could be all 60 Mbps. Somehow I already wrote an article: a router that does not cut the speed on Wi-Fi and gives 100 Mbps and more. You can read it if you are interested.

Another useful article that may be useful to you: how to increase the speed of the Internet on wi-fi through the router.

You can also check if there is a new firmware for your DIR-300. If there is – update it.
