Connection and Configuration Xiaomi Mi Wi-Fi Router 3

Xiaomi makes not bad routers. Characteristics, price, appearance – everything is good in this respect. But the settings are a mess. I mean the Chinese, well, at best English language of the web-interface and some difficulties with the settings of connection via PPTP and L2TP protocols, which are used by some popular Internet providers. You can configure PPPoE without any problems. In this article, I will show you how to configure the Xiaomi Mi Wi-Fi Router 3. In my case it’s International Version, and that means the settings are in English, not Chinese. I have already written an instruction on how to configure Xiaomi mini Wi-Fi router, so there all the settings were in Chinese. If the web-interface on your Mi Wi-Fi Router 3 is also in Chinese, you can see the instructions for setting up the Mini model (at the link above).
A lot of questions about IPTV setup on Xiaomi Mi Wi-Fi Router 3 for Vodafone and other providers. There is no way to configure IPTV through this router. On the native firmware so exactly. If you want to watch IPTV through Mi Router 3, you need to flash it with firmware from Padavan.
Let’s get right to the point – connect the router. We only need to connect the power supply and plug it in. In the WAN port (it is highlighted in blue) connect the Internet. We have in mind a network cable from the provider, or from ADSL modems. If you have a computer or laptop with LAN-port and a network cable (which is not included with Xiaomi routers), you can connect your PC/laptop via cable. At least for setup, then you can disconnect. It worked for me like this:
If you don’t have a cable, you can’t connect your computer to Mi Wi-Fi Router 3 via LAN, then just connect your device via wi-fi. It can be not only a computer, but also a smartphone, or a tablet. In this case, we only connect the internet and power to the router.
As soon as you turn on the router, it will give out an open wi-fi network with the name “Xiaomi_….”. Connect to it.
The connection may be without internet access – no big deal. The main thing is that our device is connected to the router. If there are other active internet connections on the device – disconnect them.
Quick setup of Xiaomi Mi Wi-Fi Router 3
Open your browser and go to miwi-fi.com, or 192.168.31.1. In a separate article, I already told you how to open Xiaomi router settings.
Click on the “Agree” button.
Next, you may or may not see a window where you need to choose the mode of operation. There are two of them: router and repeater. We need the first mode “Mode (Set up Wi-Fi Network)”. If you want to configure your Mi Wi-Fi Router 3 in the repeater mode, then see the article: Xiaomi router as a repeater.
In the next window you need to set the Wi-Fi network name (one for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band) and password.
The check mark next to “Turn on penetration mode” means that the maximum power of the Wi-Fi network transmitter will be set. If the checkbox is unchecked, the router will set a balanced mode of wireless network operation.
If your ISP uses PPPoE connection type, then at this stage you can click on “PPPoE” at the bottom, set the username and password (which are given by the ISP) and continue the configuration.
Later these settings can be set/changed in the web-interface.
Next, select the router location and set the administrator password. This password will need to be entered every time you log into the settings of your Xiaomi 3 router.
The router will save the settings and reboot.
We need to reconnect to the Wi-Fi network, since we changed its name and set the password.
After reconnecting to the router, you can go to the settings again at miwi-fi.com (or 192.168.31.1). Or click on the “Router admin page” button.
The web interface will open.
If the Internet through the router works on all devices, the web-interface shows that there is an Internet connection (as I have in the screenshot above), then the configuration is complete. If the Internet does not work through Xiaomi Mi Wi-Fi Router 3, then you need to check the connection settings to the provider. Now I will show you how to change PPPoE settings and configure L2TP internet connection.
Setting up PPPoE connection on Mi Wi-Fi Router 3
If you didn’t set PPPoE settings (this type of connection is used by Vodafone) during the first router setup, or you need to change these settings, go to “Settings” – “Network Settings” in the web-interface.
Select “PPPoE” from the list and specify the user name and password (you can check them with your provider or see them in the Internet connection agreement). Save the settings.
Our Xiaomi Mi3 should connect to the Internet via PPPoE protocol. Provided that you have specified all the settings correctly and there is no restriction from the provider.
Setting up PPTP and L2TP () connection on Xiaomi Mi3 router.
In the “Network Settings” you need to leave the connection type DHCP.
Also we need to create an L2TP tunnel. You can do this in the “Advanced” – “VPN” section.
Click on the “Add service” button.
We need to specify the name of the connection. You can write there the name of your provider. Next, choose the type of connection (protocol): L2TP, or PPTP. Specify the address of the server. And it remains to specify the user name and password. Important: the server name, username and password are provided by your ISP.
Don’t forget to save the settings by clicking on the “Save” button.
The connection will appear. Just click on the “Connect” button and the router will connect to the Internet(if you have specified all the parameters correctly).
Everything is ready! You can use the Internet connection!
Setting up Wi-Fi network
You can change the wireless network settings in the “Settings” – “wi-fi Settings” section.
There you can change Wi-Fi settings for the network in each band (2.4 GHz and 5GHz) separately. You can change the network name (SSID), security type, password, Wi-Fi network channel.
