TP-Link Deco M4-Review of Wi-Fi Mesh Systems, Capabilites, Characteristics

A few months ago I already did a review of the TP-Link Deco M5 Mesh System. I liked not only the look of these devices, but also how easy and quick it is to connect and configure. Well, and of course excellent performance, simple management, huge Wi-Fi network coverage with the possibility of expansion through additional modules, seamless Wi-Fi network and many other features, which are not deprived of more affordable, younger system TP-Link Deco M4. It is this Mesh-system that we are going to review today. If you do not quite understand what we are talking about, I recommend reading the article wi-fi Mesh systems – what it is and why the future is for Mesh networks.

There are two sets of TP-Link Deco M4: one and two modules. I have a set of two modules (2-pack), which can cover an area of 260 square meters with Wi-Fi signal. Of course, the coverage area of a wireless network depends on a huge number of different factors. But a single module is just as good as a regular router. You can buy one module of Deco M4 system, and if after setting up it turns out that the Wi-Fi coverage is not very stable, or in some rooms there is no signal (or it is bad), then buy another module. Or several. And not necessarily Deco M4. Modules of different TP-Link Mesh systems are fully compatible. But as far as I understand, the main module (to which the Internet is connected) should be the module from the older system.TP-Link Deco M4We’ll talk more about the technical specifications of TP-Link Deco M4, look at its appearance, but first I’d like to emphasize the main features of this Mesh-system from TP-Link.

  1. Seamless Wi-Fi network throughout the house, apartment, office. Wi-Fi in the garage, backyard, gazebo, and anywhere else. One seamless Wi-Fi network, which allows devices to switch between modules without losing connection. Ability to expand the Wi-Fi network by installing additional Deco M4 modules.
  2. Performance. This system can handle a serious load. You can not only connect many devices (up to 100), but also comfortably use this connection. Simultaneous downloading of files on different devices, online games, video in 4k – no problem.
  3. High speed wireless network due to support for 802.11ac (wi-fi 5 GHz). Older devices can be connected to the network in the range of 2.4 GHz. Modules can be connected to each other both via wi-fi and network cable (for higher speed).
  4. Very easy setup, the process of adding new modules and control of the entire TP-Link Deco M4 Wi-Fi Mesh-system through the Deco app from your phone or tablet.

The Deco M4 system is built on a chipset from Qualcomm. Each module houses two built-in Wi-Fi antennas.

There are two LAN/WAN ports (with auto mode detection) on each module. The ports are gigabit, meaning they support speeds up to 1 Gbps. In one port you can connect the Internet (if it is the main module), and in the second port you can connect a computer or TV. Or connect two Deco M4 modules via cable.

In the 5 GHz range, the maximum speed of Wi-Fi network is 867 Mbps. And in the 2.4 GHz band – 300 Mbps. There is support for MU-MIMO, Beamforming, Auto Path Selection, AP Steering, Band Steering, Self-Healing. It is possible to create one guest Wi-Fi network in the 2.4 and 5 GHz band. Each module of this system can work as a router, or access point.

There is a function of remote control (via the Internet). Ability to configure port forwarding, QoS (data prioritization), create a blacklist of devices. Also this system is able to download and update the firmware of all modules automatically.

There are rubber feet at the bottom, thanks to which the module is very stable and does not slip. All the wires are hidden behind the module, so that after connection they are practically invisible.

TP-Link Deco M4 modules look great, unusual, and will easily fit any interior. They will look beautiful both on your office desk and on a shelf in your bedroom.

Home Mesh Wi-Fi system Deco M4 is an optimal solution for medium and large apartments, houses, offices. One module for the price of a normal router. And it is not inferior to it. But in the case of installing a module of this Wi-Fi system, we always have the opportunity to buy another module and expand the Wi-Fi network. Moreover, to create a seamless Wi-Fi network, which is impossible to do with a router and repeater.

The only disadvantage of this system is the lack of a USB port. You can’t create a DLNA server or share files on the basis of this system. Unless you buy a NAS (network drive), install it and connect it to one of the modules. Of course, not everyone needs a USB port. For example, I now have a powerful router TP-Link Archer C3150 ver.2. It has two USB ports, the ability to configure offline file upload, file sharing, DLNA. But I don’t use it 🙂 🙂

If you are considering buying a router and a repeater. Or using a second router as a wifi network booster – forget it. Mesh systems are our future. Buy, install and forget.
