There are not enough LAN ports on the MESH system to connect devices via cable. What to do?
Good afternoon. How to connect by cable other devices to mesh systems, if they do not support Wi-Fi connection, mesh systems have 2 Ethernet sockets (I want to connect mesh units to each other by cable, and several devices need to connect to the first unit by wire connection (alarm system, stationary system unit…).
Probably there are some switches, if so, preferably without 220, there is no additional socket in that place….
Good afternoon. Very good, relevant question. Yes, on almost all Wi-Fi Mesh systems each unit is equipped with only two Ethernet ports that work in LAN/WAN mode. After connecting to the main module with a cable from the provider, there is one free port, in which you can connect some device. But if you plan to connect the Mesh system modules with each other by cable, there are no free ports at all on the main module. And only one LAN port will be available on the other modules.
In this situation I see two solutions:
- Connect the devices to the internet via wi-fi. For the same PC you can buy a wi-fi adapter. Perhaps there is some wireless module for the alarm system too.
- Connect a network switch (switch ) to the Mesh system. They come in 5, 8, etc. Ethernet ports. The switch is connected to the Mesh system using a network cable. After which other devices are connected to it.
The switch is necessarily connected to the power supply. If the switches that are connected to the power supply by PoE (through a network cable). But on the other side of the network cable you need to put a PoE adapter (PoE injector) and plug it into an outlet.
Since the Ethernet ports on the Mesh system are most likely gigabit, I also advise you to buy a gigabit switch. They are also managed and unmanaged. I think that for these tasks an unmanaged switch will work best. Besides, they are cheaper. For example: TP-LINK TL-SG105, TP-LINK LS1008G, Zyxel GS-105S v2 (they do not support PoE). Models with PoE support are much more expensive. For example, D-Link DGS-1005P, TP-LINK TL-SG1008P.
These are the solutions with which you can increase the number of LAN-ports on the Mesh system of any manufacturer. If anyone has other ideas – write in the comments below.
