TP-Link TL-WR844N-REVIEW OF ANEXPensive, Multi-Mode Router

The most popular routers are always budget routers. TP-Link knows about it too, so they released another low-cost model – TP-Link TL-WR844N. This model is presented as a multi-mode router. This means that in addition to the usual mode of working as a router, the device supports three additional modes, which I’ll tell you about in more detail. The router is also equipped with rather powerful antennas.
Let’s start with the main thing – with TP-Link TL-WR844N wireless capabilities. The router distributes one Wi-Fi network in the range of 2.4 GHz. It supports 802.11n standard. Wireless network speed up to 300 Mbps. Two antennas of 5 dBi each are responsible for wireless network broadcasting. There is also support for 2×2 MIMO technology. 1 WAN-port and 4-LAN-ports work at speeds up to 100 Mbps.
TL-WR844N supports 4 modes of operation:
- Router – standard mode (set by default), when internet via cable from ISP is connected to the router and it distributes it via Wi-Fi and LAN.
- Access point – allows you to connect TL-WR844N to an existing modem or other router and set up Wi-Fi network distribution.
- Range extender – in this mode the router works as a Wi-Fi network signal amplifier. It connects to another router via Wi-Fi and extends the range of the wireless network.
- WISP – connects to an Internet Service Provider via wireless network (without cable).
All these modes of operation are perfectly shown in this picture:Other features and characteristics:
- Support for the latest version of IPv6 internet protocol.
- Smooth HD Streaming feature indicates that the router supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN. All these are necessary for stable IPTV operation.
- There is a parental control and guest Wi-Fi network feature.
- Supports management via Tether app.
- Wi-Fi Schedule – you can set the Wi-Fi network to automatically turn off and on by time.
- LED control allows you to set the time when the LED lights on the router will be turned off.
TP-Link TL-WR844N Appearance Review
It comes in a small box. It has the same appearance as other routers from TP-Link.
The box contains the router itself, a power adapter, a network cable and some instructions.
The router’s case and the format of the case itself is something new. TP-Link hasn’t made any devices in such a case yet. And despite the fact that this is a budget model, the router looks very cool.
White color, sharp lines, geometric shapes. Stylish and elegant design. Assembled qualitatively. Plastic in my experience is not inferior in quality to more expensive models.
The router itself is very compact.
There are three indicators on the front: LAN, Internet (WAN) and wi-fi.
4 LAN-ports, 1 WAN-port, power adapter connector and WPS/Reset button occupy the whole back panel.
There are two holes on the bottom of the router. This means that the antennas can be folded down and hang it on the wall. A sticker with factory information is also located there.
The appearance of TP-Link TL-WR844N will definitely not disappoint you. And you don’t need a lot of space for it.
The web-interface is simple and clear. However, so far it is only in English.
I think that in the next firmware versions it will be possible to change the web-interface language. And don’t forget that you can configure and control this router from your phone via the Tether application.
I measured the speed through TL-WR844N. I measured it on my laptop, which is installed in another room (one wall of medium thickness). Windows showed the maximum signal strength (all divisions).
Very good results, as for the 2.4 GHz range in an apartment where there are about 10 other neighboring Wi-Fi networks in the same range. The maximum speed according to the tariff of the Internet provider is up to 100 Mbps.
Did not find any disadvantages in this router. The price is great, the looks are great, the functionality is great too. Attractive appearance and price is likely to make this model very popular. After all, despite my advice (to buy a router with support for Wi-Fi 5 GHz and 802.11ac standard) many people are not ready to spend a lot of money on a router. And in most cases, even a budget router is enough to organize a Wi-Fi network in a small house or apartment, and connect several phones, computers and other devices.
