Do you need a router with Wi-Fi 6 (802.11AX) for PlayStation 5?
Hi. Yes, PlayStation 5 has support for the latest wireless standards. Wi-Fi with support for all standards: 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax (ax is Wi-Fi 6). With support for 2×2 MIMO technology. Plus, the PS5 supports Bluetooth 5.1.
PlayStation 5 can be connected to any Wi-Fi router. Even an old one. But to unlock the full potential of the new Wi-Fi module in PS5 – you need a router that supports Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax). But whether it makes sense to buy such a router specifically for PS5 – I don’t even know. Probably there is a sense only if you have Internet at the tariff of your Internet provider above 100 Mbit/s. Since up to 100 Mbps the new Playstation 5 should give out and through Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) in the range of 5 GHz.
Of course, it’s not just the connection speed that’s important for PlayStation. Ping and stability of the connection under load is important. Here you need to test the connection via 802.11ac, 802.11ax and draw conclusions. I do not have such an opportunity yet.
When choosing a router for PlayStation 5, I would pay attention not only to the supported standards (wi-fi 6, wi-fi 5). It is very important that the router is productive. You don’t need to buy budget models. This I mean that a more expensive router with support for the AC standard can show better results in terms of speed, stability of connection and ping under load than a cheaper and weaker router with support for the AX standard. Though, of course, it’s hard to call these routers cheap nowadays.
The main thing is that PS5 supports Wi-Fi 6. You will always have time to buy a new router. You can first check how the new console will work with your router. Besides, you have a dual-band router with Wi-Fi 5 support.
All manufacturers are now very actively producing routers with Wi-Fi 6. And that means there’s more competition. For us buyers, it means lower prices and a wider choice. You can also read my article about choosing a Wi-Fi router in 2020-2021.
